We love projects that push our skills and leave us with something we’ll use every day—and this custom-built TV stand checks both of those boxes. Not only does it look fantastic in our living room, but it also gave us the perfect opportunity to sharpen our cabinet-making techniques.

More Than Just a TV Stand

This project is essentially a mini masterclass in cabinetry. You’ll build everything from the case and face frame to solid-panel doors and a working drawer—all on a smaller scale, but with techniques you’ll be able to apply to future kitchen cabinets, built-ins, or other freestanding furniture.

You’ll tackle:

• Precision panel cutting using a table saw

• Rabbets and dadoes that keep the case strong and square

• Making drawers and face frames that fit cleanly and look sharp

• Installing doors with solid wood panels for a beautiful, professional finish

• Radius cuts and precise drilling to round out your skills

Every step is a great learning experience, and the finished product? It’s the kind of piece that looks like it came straight out of a high-end furniture store.

Beyond the challenge, what we really loved about this TV stand was how customizable it is. Want more drawers instead of shelves? Prefer an open back for easy cable access? Want to size it up for a bigger screen? Once you understand the fundamentals of this casework, it’s easy to tweak the design to match your needs and style.

We used a warm stain to bring out the grain in the wood, but you could just as easily paint it for a modern or farmhouse feel.

This TV stand is one of those projects that really makes you feel like a craftsman. It’s not the quickest build on the list, but if you're looking to level up your skills and create a truly functional piece of furniture, we highly recommend it.
